I have a confession to make: I am an awful person when it comes to fancy cosmetic products🙈. I check the ingredients list first, and most of the time, I see good marketing rather than impressive formulation.
And sometimes, I am impressed by the ability of some brands to create an iconic product based on a straightforward idea! Dior Addict Lip Sugar Scrub is a great example of how the company can sell something very simple for such a high price.
The original product is made with a well-balanced combination of natural and synthetic waxes and emollients, but we will dupe it only with natural ingredients. The texture of our product will be a bit different, and it will have a shorter shelf life (Dior uses stable emollients instead of natural oils to achieve a long shelf life), but at the same time, it will provide more care for the lips.
WHY EXFOLIATE THE LIPS?
This is why you should really incorporate lip scrub in your beauty routine:
- Exfoliation for Softness: Lip scrubs work to remove dead skin cells, promoting softer, smoother lips. Regular use helps maintain a supple texture, preventing dryness and flakiness.
- Enhanced Lip Product Absorption: Exfoliating your lips creates a clean canvas, allowing lip balms, glosses, and other products to absorb more effectively. This ensures better results and longer-lasting hydration.
- Prevention of Chapped Lips: Lip scrubs help prevent chapping by eliminating dead skin. Regular exfoliation is a proactive approach to combatting dryness, especially in harsh weather conditions.
- Improved Lip Circulation: Massaging a lip scrub into your lips stimulates blood flow, promoting healthier, rosier lips. This increased circulation contributes to a natural, youthful appearance.
- Perfect Prep for Lipstick Application: For makeup enthusiasts, lip scrubs serve as an excellent pre-lipstick step. Smooth lips provide an even surface for lipstick application, preventing clumps and ensuring a polished look.
Incorporating a lip scrub into your regular skincare routine can contribute to healthier, more beautiful lips year-round.
SUGAR LIP SCRUB
The recipe for 50 g (makes approx 4 lipsticks):
- 7,5 g of soybean wax (or other low melting wax, like fruit myrica wax)
- 5 g of beeswax
- 6 g of fractionated coconut oil (caprylic/capric triglycerides)
- 1.75 g of cacao butter
- 0,25 g of fragrance oil (optional)
- 30 g of sugar
- a pinch of red mineral mica (optional)
You can add essential oils instead of fragrance oil and replace fractionated coconut oil with other liquid oil, but in this case, I would suggest adding an antioxidant (0,2% of Vitamin E) to make your formulation more stable.
If your scrub is too hard, decrease a % of beeswax in the formulation (you can entirely replace it with soy wax if you live in cool climate).
